Connecting to stories of people and heritage
About This Project
My team and I create video stories about local communities, heritage and small businesses and the people behind them. We make these stories accessible for tourists through QR codes.
We embed these QR codes at the place, for example, in specifically designed menus for food vendors. The menus aim to help tourist to buy from local vendors and spend the money in the right places.
The videos aim to tell travelers the stories of the places, food and people to have a better understanding of the meaning of each place.
We hope to support local communities and their economies especially in the wake of Covid-19 to rebuild the economy.
In the first phase I will focus on the Chinatown area as many communities are threatened by rapid urban development and Covid-19. My team and I will start with the local heritage places, communities and small businesses that I cover on my tours and then expand beyond that.
Why is this project important?
- Due to a sluggish economy, Covid-19 and other factors local communities and businesses need more exposure help improve the local economy.
- Travelers are missing out because of lack information, trust or because of the language barrier. Tourists tend to take a picture at best and vendors have no income.
- Only a fraction of tourism spending reaches the grassro0ts economy.
- Local heritage places and communities are often overlooked and have insufficient support to tap into their full potential.
